At last the adventure begins!

I am off to explore Central and Northern Mongolia. Five backpackers and myself, all from different countries have chartered a Russian Jeep with a local driver for 2 weeks. We will share all expenses, camp, cook, hike, fish and travel on horseback. There will be no phone or internet, no electricity and running water-just nature, wild animals and nomads!

I will be in touch after my return, around July, with, I'm sure, lots to tell.

A few parting shots before I go...

Distant view of Ulaan Baatar Just the facts:
This distant view of Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia's capital city, has existed in name since 1639. Originally Ulaan Baatar meaning 'Red Hero' was located at the monastry of Da Khuree about 421km from modern-day Ulaan Baatar.

This nomadic national capital has been moved from several locations more than a dozen times. Today more than a million people live in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia's largest city.

Life on the Mongol plain

North of Ulaan Baatar you get more grass plains. Wild horses can be seen, as well as herds of cows and sheeps. The occasional ger, known as yurt in some places, is sited.

We are all bursting with anticipation.
